Calm, experience-led 11+ preparation in East Devon
About
The 11+ can feel confusing for families. There is often plenty of information, but very little clarity about what actually matters, when to act, or how to support a child without adding pressure.
Lympstone 11+ exists to make that process calmer and clearer. We provide structured, experience led preparation for children aiming for Colyton Grammar School and other local grammar and independent school routes.
Our focus is simple. We help children feel confident through familiarity, and we help parents feel confident through clarity.
WHO WE ARE
Jane Moffatt is a well known 11+ tutor for Colyton Grammar School, the Torquay grammar schools, and private school 11+ preparation. With over thirty years of teaching and tutoring experience, she is a qualified secondary school Maths teacher and still teaches Maths and English up to GCSE level.
Unlike many tutors, Jane works full time as a tutor. That means she has the time to advise parents properly, keep preparation calm, and create a tailored scheme of work for each child she tutors.
Jane also understands the 11+ journey from a parent perspective. Both of her children attended Colyton Grammar School, so she has lived through the same worries and emotions that many families experience during preparation.
Mark brings additional local experience through his work at Torquay Girls Grammar School, where he worked for twelve years. He now also tutors 11+ and supports families who want a clear and steady plan, including sensible alternatives when needed.

HOW IT STARTED
When Colyton Grammar School stopped running their practice exam in 2015, many parents who had already been through the process with older children were understandably concerned. They knew how helpful exam familiarity could be, and they did not want younger children to go into the real test without that experience.
Parents asked Jane to organise a mock morning. It was a great success and became the foundation for the calm, realistic mock exams we continue to run today. The purpose has never been to create pressure. It has always been to remove the unknown and help children feel steadier by giving them the chance to learn coping strategies and exam technique.
Children tend to feel more confident when they know what to expect. A realistic mock makes the real exam feel more familiar and less daunting.
A clear picture helps families make calmer decisions. We explain what results mean and advise on what the most sensible next steps are so that parents feel that they can confidently help their child succeed.
OUR APPROACH
Our approach is built around calm, structured preparation that supports confidence. We focus on clarity, familiarity and fast but steady progress. Children do best when preparation feels manageable and parents do best when they feel confidence in their ability to help their child progress.
We deliberately avoid intensity and urgency while still giving the children a full exam experience.
Preparation should build confidence, not undermine it.
The aim is to support children academically while also building resilience to cope with something new and unknown while also helping them feel emotionally steady about the process.
WHAT MAKES THIS DIFFERENT
Many parents tell us that the most difficult part of the 11+ is not knowing what to do next. Our role is to reduce that uncertainty. We support children with preparation that feels positive and manageable, and we support parents with clear insight and practical advice.
Because Jane works full time as a tutor, families can access thoughtful guidance and a plan that suits the child, rather than a one size approach. It means parents can ask questions, sense check timing, and feel reassured that they are taking sensible steps.
Each child is different. We build preparation around what the child needs, so learning stays achievable and confidence stays intact.
We understand the local schools and the routes families consider. That helps us guide parents with calm realism rather than generic advice.
OUR LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
Our sessions are delivered in small groups with experienced teachers who quickly get to know the children they are working with. This allows us to adapt teaching, notice confidence levels, and respond to individual needs without creating pressure.
Children are encouraged and supported at the right level for them. The atmosphere is relaxed, fun, calm and focused, helping children feel comfortable engaging with the work and asking questions. We KNOW the depth of knowledge needed and the best way to tackle this because we have had 30+ years to hone the methods.
The aim is for children to leave with increased skills knowledge, greater resilience and feeling steadier and more confident. Preparation works best when it feels supportive, structured, and achievable.
